If you're thinking about learning Cantonese in Hong Kong or online, you might be wondering:
“How much do Cantonese classes cost?”
The truth is, prices vary depending on the teacher, the class size, and how lessons are structured. And while some classes seem affordable, they don’t always offer the quality or support students actually need.
Here’s a simple breakdown to help you compare your options.
Average Prices for Cantonese Classes in Hong Kong
HK$220–280 for a 45–60 minute group class
Class duration: often 1.5 to 3 hours
Group size: typically 4 to 8 students
Some students have told us it’s hard to get enough speaking time or feedback in larger group settings. We've also heard of schools grouping students with very different levels, or hiring unqualified teachers who show up late. Of course, this depends on the school, the teacher, and how the class is managed.
Online Cantonese Class Prices (on Popular Platforms)
Online classes offer more flexibility and a wider range of tutors, but quality can vary.
Preply: ~US$8–30/hour, some tutors charge up to US$50/hour
AmazingTalker: ~US$10–30/hour, depending on experience
Since anyone can list themselves as a tutor, the teaching approach and pronunciation are often inconsistent. Some students shared that their previous tutors weren’t native Cantonese speakers, had unclear pronunciation, or offered little structure in class.
That’s why it’s important to look beyond just price.
